KATHMANDU, Oct. 27: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has taken action against 2,509 people during a campaign against drunk driving from October 16 to 25.

Similarly, a case under the Public Offence Act has been filed against 15 long-route drivers found driving vehicles, consuming alcohol, said Division Spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police Pawan Giri. [break]

Likewise, five people were killed in separate accidents while eight were injured critically and four others sustained minor injuries in the Kathmandu Valley during that period.

Of them, two people who had been out of their homes for taking a stroll in the morning time had died in a microbus-hit in Kirtipur. Similarly, one was killed after being hit by a bus at Sitapila and two others were killed in Bhaktapur.

However, the number of road accidents during this Dashain was less than the records of the last year, said the traffic police. A total of 14 people had died in separate road mishaps from the day of Ghatasthapana to Purnima in the capital last year.

The traffic police have claimed that a campaign against the drunk driving is the main reason behind a decrease in the number of road accidents.

Meanwhile, the number of passengers entering into the capital after the Dashain celebrations is increasing. As many as 4,709 vehicles entered into the capital via different points in the last 24 hours, it is learnt.
