CHITWAN, Feb 8: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said the government was waiting for an agreement with the agitating Madhesi Front to announce the date for the local poll.
Speaking at a press meet organized by Press Center Chitwan today, the Prime Minister said the election of local bodies was likely in May or June and its date would be determined only with the consensus of the Madhesi Front and other political parties.
The Election Commission was already urged to start preparations for the local poll which was the like the announcement of the election date, he claimed. The election should be held with the participation of all political parties, he asserted, adding that the government first effort would be to endorse the constitution amendment bill from the parliament on the basis of political consensus and it would only look for other possible ways if difficulties were surfaced for forging a consensus towards that end.
No act required for holding the local poll is left to be formulated, as stated by the Prime Minister who was confident that the local poll would take place in the intended date. "There is no doubt that the election will be held." Stating that an act relating to the election threshold was not necessary at present, he said the House was adjourned for two week to study the Local Body Reconstructing Commission report.
In his response to journalists' query about the government view over the main opposition (CPN-UML)'s claim that the Prime Minister should leave the government if he failed to hold the election, he said the government had not only expressed commitment for the election but initiated a process for so.
