KATHMANDU, Dec 7: The All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union-Revolutionary ANNISU (R ) staged protests at Maitighar on Wednesday against the Indian encroachment upon the Mahakali River in Darchula district. The protests came in the wake of India starting building embankments without coordination with Nepal, pushing the river toward Nepal.
During the protest, the protesters also burnt an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Despite the international laws that allow building structures in coordination with the concerned parties without affecting the other country in the border areas, India has been building embankments along the river bank unilaterally.
India has set up a Gabion wall in the embankment just 7 to 10 meters away from Nepal and has built structures diverting the original course of the Mahakali River toward Nepal.
However, the Indian side on Wednesday halted the construction of the embankment after widespread protests in Nepal.
