Separate panels -- one led by party Chairman Jhalanath Khanal and another by leader KP Sharma Oli -- are vying for positions in central body of ANNFSU.
According to leaders, Sovit Dhakal has the backing of Khanal, while Madhav Dhungel has the support of Oli. Sources say Dhungel also has the backing of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal.
The union was supposed to begin its closed session from Saturday morning, but it has not taken place by the evening due to growing factionalism.
ANNFSU central leader Hira Lal Vishwakarma openly criticized the party leadership for interfering in student politics and creating troubles. “The way the party is playing interfering in the union is an example of bad politics,” he said urging party leaders not to create divisions among students.
