ANNFSU leads in FSU election<br/>NSU second, ANNISU-R third

KATHMANDU, March 20: All Nepal National Free Students´ Union (ANNFSU), the student wing of Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), is leading the race as of Friday morning in the Free Students´ Union (FSU) elections.



The nationwide FSU elections took place on Thursday with sporadic clashes at several colleges.



The ANNFSU has won presidency and other seats in 86 colleges and of these its entire panel of candidates won in 65 colleges, according to ANNFSU Chairperson Ram Kumari Jhankri. [break]



She said her union also won mixed seats in over 46 colleges while the union is leading in many other colleges where the vote counting is underway.



So far, Nepali Congress´ student wing, Nepal Students´ Union, is in the second position, winning elections in 54 colleges -- either entire panel or presidency.



"In 80 colleges we won seats in mixed results," Manojmani Acharya, general secretary of NSU, told myrepublica.com.



Likewise, the Maoist student union, All Nepal National Independent Students´ Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R), won total panel in 28 colleges, while it won seats in 27 colleges with mixed results, according to the ANNISU-R secretariat office.



The Maoist student union also won seats in 15 colleges where it jointly fought in elections forming poll alliances with ANNFSU and other unions.



Leaders from the all the three student unions claimed that they are leading in the vote count that is going on in many colleges.



Counting is underway at Trichandra College, Kathmandu, the oldest college in the country, at Central Campus, Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur and Prithvi Narayan Campus, Pokhara. Trichandra is traditionally a stronghold of NSU while PN Campus is a stronghold of ANNFSU.

The elections on Thursday were marred by sporadic clashes, with at least one student killed and dozens other injured across the country. Nearly a dozen campuses across the country have been postponed the poll following clashes between rival student unions.
