Over two dozens students have been injured in the clashes. The seriously injured have been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.
The Free Student Union (FSU) election at the campus has been put off indefinitely following the violence. The FSU election was scheduled to be held on March 31.
Clashes between CPN(UML)-affiliated All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) and the Maoist-affiliated All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) erupted as the outgoing FSU campus unit was organizing a welcome function. The FSU unit is headed by ANNFSU.
ANNFSU said that the clashes erupted as ANNISU-R students accompanied by Young Communist League (YCL) cadres tried to disrupt the welcome function. ANNFSU alleged that the clashes ensued after the Maoist students disrupted the power supply.
ANNISU-R activists staged a demonstration after the clash, with each of them carrying a stick.
ANNFSU central member and Seti Zonal in-charge Bishnu Chand has received deep injuries to the head. He along with Central treasurer of ANNFSU (Sixth) Lachchhi Ram Acharyawas airlifted to Kathmandu after undergoing preliminary treatment at Seti Zonal Hospital, Dhangadhi. Chand received head injuries while trying to the calm students engaged in the fierce clash.
Others injured in the clash include ANNFSU activists Deepak Khadka, Gambhir KC, Sanjaya Sharma, Laxmi Prasad Khanal, Ishwor Prasad Joshi, Rabindra Thapa and Dharmananda Rawal. ANNFSU-R activist Sher Bahadur Rawal was also injured in the incident. They are currently undergoing treatment at Seti Zonal Hospital.
Irate ANNISU-R students also set on fire a motorcycle belonging to ANNFSU activist Naresh Thagunna and several bicycles parked on campus premises.
