Animal, chicken feed prices cut

KATHMANDU, May 15: Starting Sunday, the feed industry has slashed the prices of chicken and cow/buffalo feed. Price of chicken feed has been slashed by Rs 1.50 per kg and cow/buffalo feed by Rs 1.30 per kg. A meeting of the entrepreneurs took the decision on Saturday.



“Since there has been a decrease in the price of maize and soybean husk, we decided to decrease the price of feed,” said Narayan Hari Khatri, president of Nepal Feed Industries Association. [break]



Price of number 1 and 2 feed for chickens have been decreased to Rs 29.50, and number 3 to Rs 28.80. The feed industry has also decreased the price of feed for layers by Rs 1.30 per kg.



“Our demand is that the price of every 50-kg sack feed should be reduced by Rs 100,” said Gokarna Ghimire, president of Poultry Farmers´ Association. The association has been putting this demand since two weeks.



The demand for feed in Nepal is 1,600 tonne per day. The demand has been growing at the rate of 15-20 per cent per month.



Hatcheries that produce chickens have also reduced the price of chicks by Rs 5 per chick. Since chicks are now being produced according to the demand, there has been a reduction in prices. Price of boiler chicks has been reduced to Rs 35 and layers to Rs 70. According to entrepreneurs, there is a weekly demand of 1 million chicks while the production is 900,000 chicks.
