KATHMANDU, Aug 24: Dr. Govinda KC has demanded that the government amend the new Muluki codes and not introduce laws which curtail the freedom of expression. Dr KC has also urged the government to prevent the influence of mafia while granting affiliations to colleges from the Agriculture and Forestry University.
Issuing a press statement Thursday, Dr. KC said that the new Muluki codes have terrorized the doctors and health workers and increased the risk of depriving the ordinary people of treatment.
New laws with major changes to come into effect from Aug 17
“It will badly affect the people of the rural areas and emergency patients, who will be referred to other places because of the law. As a result, a situation will be created wherein patients will be compelled to die while being rushed from one place to another,” Dr. KC said. “If anybody is dissatisfied for any reason, they can file case against doctors, who will have to suffer even if they have done nothing wrong. In such a situation, doctors will have to defend themselves instead of taking risk to treat patients,” he said. “So I urge the government and all the political parties to amend it. Otherwise, they should be responsible for any adverse situation in the days to come.”
Dr. KC also criticized the provisions in the new Muluki codes that are against the notion of press freedom. He blamed the government for ‘trying to dictate the media.’ “It seems the government is going to impose totalitarianism by controlling the media, which speaks for the common man,” he said.
