Ambitious recommendations of lawmakers for relief, reconstruction

KATHMANDU, May 10: Lawmakers have recommended revolutionary and ambitious plans for the rescue, relief of the earthquake survivors and reconstruction of the physical infrastructures ravaged by the April 25 devastating earthquake.

Speaking at the meeting of the Finance Committee under the Legislature-Parliament today, they suggested to include some of the important points missed in the resolution proposal tabled on Saturday.


During the meeting, Lawmaker Kedar Prasad Sanjel suggested setting up a Ministry of Science, Technology, and Disaster Management instead of Ministry of Science and Technology and keep the ministry under the Prime Minister's responsibility. He also suggested the compulsory provision of State Minister.

He also suggested setting up a well-equipped 700-bed Medical College and Natural Disaster Rescue Center in five development regions.

Similarly, lawmaker Raj Kumar Agrawal said the government should appeal to the billionaires and renowned sportspersons of the world for support.

Lawmaker Gopal Dahit stressed on the need of collecting food and construction materials from every constituency and support the earthquake survivors.

Likewise, lawmaker Keshav Badal said the government should establish a fund of at least Rs 20 billion instead of current proposal of two billion rupees for the reconstruction of the earthquake affected structures and rescue and relief support.

Rewati Raman Bhandari, invitee at the meeting suggested not to purchase the means of luxury by any government bodies and canceling the foreign tours in 2015 and deposit the funds for the same into the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund.

Chairperson of the Committee Prakash Jwala opined for making the rescue and relief activities transparent, fair and effective through single door policy while suggesting that the government should bear all the expenses of the treatment of the people injured in the earthquake.

He also suggested for making high level technical committee and carrying out the rescue, relief and rehabilitation by forming a Ministry of Disaster Management. The committee also decided to demand the Ministry of Home, and Ministry of Finance to update on the works carried out by them so far.

Other lawmakers attended the meeting were Bharat Mohan Adhikari, CP Mainali, Shakti Basnet, among others and they suggested to make the government rescue and relief works more effective. RSS
