Of 92 samples, 50 test positive for COVID-19

Kathmandu, July 16: Tarkeghyang – a remote village in Helambu Rural Municipality-1 — has been largely hit by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Mingmar Lama, ward chairperson of Helambu-1, as many as 92 people were tested for COVID-19 a few days ago. “Of them, 50 have tested positive for the virus,” Chairman Lama said. “They are currently in home isolation and their health condition is reported to be normal for now.”

“This is the very first time in Helambu Rural Municipality-1 that so many people have tested positive for COVID-19,” according to Lama.

Helambu was largely hit by floods and landslides last month. Roads and bridges are yet to be reconstructed. The only means for these people to travel in case of medical emergencies is chartering a chopper paying almost Rs 100,000.

In recent days, COVID-19 cases are on the rise in rural villages. Cities like Kathmandu are easing COVID-19 restrictions after witnessing a decline in new cases of COVID-19 but villages like Tarkeghyang where no COVID-19 vaccines have arrived are facing their worst times.
