KATHMANDU, Aug 15: Nepal will host the first meeting of the alliance of mountainous countries on October 5-6 in Kathmandu. It will be participated by 53 countries.

The alliance will hold discussions and develop strategies to tackle the effects posed by climate change in the high Himalayas.[break]

As proposed by Nepal during COP-15 summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, the alliance aims to present itself in the form of a separate bloc before formally putting forth its agenda at the upcoming UN Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) summit during the Conference of Parties (CoP-16) meet to be held in Mexico in December.

Officials at the Ministry of Environment said the ministerial conference will discuss how to deal with the effects of climate change in mountainous countries. The conference aims to strongly project the voice of mountainous countries before the world.

The proposed Mountain Alliance Initiative for Climate Change includes all Least Developed Countries (LDCs) that have high mountains. Small island nations that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change will also be part of the alliance.
