GORKHA, March 28: Police have arrested, Renjan Lama, the alleged mastermind behind the biggest ever smuggling of shatoosh in the country. Lama was arrested from Kathmandu on Wedesday.

The police had seized shatoosh worth Rs 3.5 billion while being smuggled to Tibet on January 6, 2013.

Shatoosh is the fur of Tibetan Antelope (locally known as Chiru).

Following the seizure of shatoosh, police had also arrested the three accused -- Lama's brother Lendup Lama, Purna Gurung, and Sarmila Baram of Gorkha district. Gurung and Baram in their statements to the police have claimed that Lama had masterminded the smuggling.

One month after the incident, a case had been filed against Lama on the charge of smuggling parts of the endangered animal.

Lama is one among the six others involved in the smuggling of shatoosh. While the Central Bureau of Investigation arrested him from the capital, five others are still at large. On Friday, he was sent to Gorkha district jail for further investigation.

Meanwhile, arrested Lama claimed that he had only been hired to transport shatoosh. "I was hired to transport shatoosh," he said.

Tibetan antelope is of the endangered species found in Nepal, India and Tibet only. Trading of rare animal parts is illegal in our country.
