Agricultural sector received 13.1 percent loans, while 6.1 percent allocated to underprivileged sector in last fiscal year

KATHMANDU, July 23: According to the monetary policy unveiled on Sunday, banks provided the highest amount of loans to the agricultural sector in the last fiscal year 2022/23.

According to the monetary policy, 13.1 percent (Rs 552.99 billion) of the total loans from commercial banks in mid-May were invested in the agricultural sector, 6.8 percent (Rs 286.77 billion) in the energy sector and 9.9 percent (Rs 418.36 billion) in micro, domestic, small and medium enterprises.

Similarly, 24.9 percent (Rs 113.18 billion) of the total loans in the agriculture, micro, domestic and small enterprises/businesses, energy and tourism sectors from development banks and 22.3 percent (Rs 19.65 billion) were invested by finance companies.

In mid-June, an average of 6.1 percent (Rs 260.84 billion of the total loan disbursements from commercial banks went to the deprived sector. Similarly, development banks have invested 9.1 percent (Rs 42.32 billion), and finance companies have invested 6.1 percent (Rs 5.65 billion) of their loans in this sector.

Out of the subsidized loans provided by the Government of Nepal, 147,510 borrowers have taken Rs 203.100 billion as of mid-June 2023. 

As of mid-June, NRB has provided refinance to productive sectors, including agriculture, small enterprises, exports, and loans in areas impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, with an investment of Rs 1.96 billion.
