Experts have advised people to remain mentally prepared for similar aftershocks for a month.
Geologist Dr Taranidhi Bhattarai said the study of earthquakes above 7 Ritcher scale shows that aftershocks continue for a month. He said the 7.6 Ritcher scale earthquake that hit Pakistan in 2005 is a relevant one. "At the time, aftershocks ranging from 4 to 6.2 Richter scale hit Pakistan for one month," said Bhattarai, who did a two-week study after the 2005-earthquake in Pakistan.
General public, local markets and every section of the society in Nepal strived hard to maintain normalcy since the very beginning and vital public utilities tried to provide uninterrupted services. But complete normalcy hasn't been restored as recurring aftershocks continue to terrorize people. Significant tremors were felt until Sunday evening.
Vehicular movements along short and long routes continued across the country since the very first day. Security arrangements, telecommunication, civil aviation, electricity and water supply among other vital services were continuous at various places or resumed immediately in other areas where they were briefly disrupted.
"People showed incredible resilience while security and vital supplies were restored immediately. It was beyond my expectation and I was happily surprised," sociologist Sanjeev Pokharel told Republica. Thousands of people staying in the capital city left for their home districts immediately after the major tremor devastated Kathmandu and other parts of the country on April 25.
Many believed the mass exit helped the authorities take the situation under control. Around 500,000 people are believed to have left the Valley spontaneously and later the government authorities and public transport operators -- by providing additional vehicles free of cost -- helped people reach their home districts.
Thousands of people had to leave Kathmandu also because Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Dhading, Gorkha and Nuwakot, among other neighboring districts of the Valley, were badly hit by the earthquake.
For the last couple of days, people seemed to have become used to mild aftershocks.
"Today [Sunday] I was at a shopping center. A large group of people suddenly ran away from the mall. But within a minute they returned and resumed shopping," said Pokharel.
