Additional Chinese aid worth Rs 14 billion to Nepal

HONG KONG, March 30 : China has announced additional Rs 14.5 billion in aid to Nepal.

Chinese President Xi Jinping made the announcement during his meeting with President Dr Ram Baran Yadav in Hainan on Saturday. The Chinese president announced the aid package in order to further strenthen security cooperation between the two countries.


Dr Yadav, who is currently in China to attend the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2015 held in Hainan, had half an hour-long bilateral meeting with Xi at Boao-based State Guest House. This is the first meeting between the presidents of two of the countries after Nepal was declared republic in 2008.

Nepali ambassador to China Mahesh Maskey termed the president's visit very fruitful. "The Chinese president has announced 900 million yuan in aid to upgrade Kodari Highway and invest in other transport infrastructures," he said.

According to Dr Maskey, China has also expressed readiness to launch various 15,000 programs, including providing training and technological assistaing in agriculture technologies in Nepal in next five years time.

President Dr Yadav while apprising Chinese President Xi that Nepal's political parties are currently working to bring a new statute thanked China for her generous support to Nepal's development endeavors. On the occasion, XI had expressed his desire to see early promulgation of new statute in Nepal.

President Dr Yadav also extended invitation to Chinese President Xi to visit Nepal to mark the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Nepal-China diplomatic relations. He said he is eager to welcome President Xi in Nepal within this year.

According to the Communist Party of China (CPC) news website people.cn, President Dr Yadav had expressed commitment to Nepal's one china policy, while Xi had asked Nepali side to help further strengthen security situation in Nepal. "We hope that Nepal will not allow any anti-China activities on its soil. Both sides need to be ready to further deepen cooperation in security cooperation and promotion of laws," the online newspaper quoted Xi as saying.

Xi also appreciated Nepal's firm support to China on matters relating to Tibet and Taiwan. "China has strong support to Nepal's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity," said Xi while maintaining that the security of Nepal and China was interrelated.

Xi also thanked Nepal for her support to China's proposal for Silk Road Economic Belt and Asian Infrastructure Development Bank. President Dr Yadav had addressed Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2015 on Saturday. He also held bilateral meeting with Austrian President Heinz Fischer and Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven on Saturday.
