ADB ups annual assistance to Nepal

KATHMANDU, May 6: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced to increase annual loan assistance to Nepal to US$ 300 million . The Manila-based multilateral donor was so far providing $250 million a year to Nepal.



The 46th annual meeting of ADB held on Saturday and Sunday in New Delhi also passed a proposal to resume loan and grant assistance to Myanmar. [break]



Finance Minister Shankar Koirala, who led the Nepali delegation to the meeting, said ADB officials urged Nepal to increase investment and quality of development projects and pursue inclusive economic growth in the country.



Koirala also said ADB has announced to continue its loan support in infrastructure development, education and environment sectors.



At the occasion, the Nepali delegation sought ADB´s increased support in infrastructure development especially on road and hydropower sectors.



In the sideline of the meeting, Nepali officials also met top Indian officials and requested them to increase Indian investment in industrial sector.



“We asked Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram to remove countervailing tax being levied on some Nepali exportable goods and for operationalization of Visakhapatnam ports at the earliest to support Nepal´s trade with overseas countries,” Koirala told media persons upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. “He is positive toward our demands.”
