Acharya shares lead with Lama

KATHMANDU, April 22: Veteran pro Deepak Acharya shared the lead with Sanjay Lama as the Surya Nepal NPGA Tour Championship teed off at the par-72 Gokarna Golf Club on Monday.



Acharya and Lama carded three-under 69 on Monday as six golfers produced under-par cards on the first day of the 10th and final event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2012-13.[break]



Purna Sharma finished the first day in the third position with a score of two-under 70 while Pashupati Sharma, Rabi Khadka and Ramesh Adhikari shared the fourth position with the score of one-under 71.



Surya Sharma, who submitted a card of even-par 72 on Monday, is in the seventh position while Raju Thapa lies eighth after scoring one-over 73. Ram Thapa carded two-over 74 to finish the day in the ninth position, while Tham Bahadur Rai and Mani Rai shared the 10th position with the score of three-over 75.



The event will be played over 72 holes and the cut will be applied after the completion of 36 holes. The top 21 professionals and ties will it to the final 36 holes along with the amateurs who make the pro cut.



Leader Acharya carded even-par 36 on the front nine and three-under 33 on the back nine. He carded birdies on the third, ninth, 10th, 12th, 13th and 17th holes while he suffered bogeys on the fifth, sixth and 14th holes.



Likewise, joint leader Lama took a turn with two-under 34 and scored one-under 35 on the back nine. Lama shot birdies on the fifth, sixth, ninth, 13th, 16th and 18th holes while he suffered bogeys on the third, 14th and 17th holes.



Purna Sharma carded even-par 36 on the front nine and two-under 34 on the back nine. Pashupati Sharma carded two-under 34 on the front nine and one-over 37 on the back nine while both Rabi Khadka and Ramesh Adhikari carded even-par 36 on the front nine and one-under 35 on the back nine.



The event is important for both professional and amateur golfers as the top 30 pros and top 10 amateurs of the event will make it to the Surya Nepal Masters that is scheduled to take place at Gokarna from May 8 to 11.



The winning pro of the event will bag Rs 88,000 while the runner-up will get Rs 55,000. The top 21 professionals and ties will also receive prize money.



Among the amateurs, Bishnu Sharma and Dinesh Prajapati, the emerging talents of the Surya Nepal NGA Youth Development program, remained on top with first-day scores of five-over 77. Tashi Ghale is third at seven-over 79 while Tashi Tshering and Sunil KC are joint fourth at eight-over 80.
