Abductor of US tourist nabbed

KATHMANDU, June 1: Police on Wednesday said one of the two alleged kidnappers of the US national John Robert Schrumpf has been arrested. Schrumpf was kept in captivity for 17 hours and was ripped off his cash and belongings last weekend.



Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) said that Mahesh Jung Karki, 23, of Kathmandu Metropolitan-4, was one of the two persons who picked up the tourist from a Thamel lodge early on Saturday morning. [break]



He was arrested from Bouddha. Police also recovered the tourist´s Nikon Coolpix camera and black leather bag in a raid at Khadka´s rented house.



According to the police, Khadka accompanied by another youth had abducted Schrumpf from a room of Dream Home Lodge and taken him to the Hyatt Casino in a taxi. In course of captivity, he was robbed off Rs 40,000 and mobile phones among other belongings. He was even forced to swap his ATM card.



MPCD said others involved in the kidnapping will be hunted down soon.
