KATHMANDU, July 15: A senior Indian Congress leader Dr Karan Singh has said that the remarks made by Prime Minister K P Oli that Lord Ram was born in a village in East Nepal and that Ayodhya was only an artificial concept created by India was ‘mind-boggling’.

Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, Dr Singh said the outrageous statement of Prime Minister Oli will have hurt the sentiments of billions of Hindus living not only in India and Nepal but around the world. “The statement could have been disseminated as gymnastics of a distorted mind, except that it comes fast on the heels of Oli’s unfortunate unilateral action regarding territorial dispute with India,” he said.

Dr Singh expressed worry that Prime Minister Oli was bent on widening the distance between Nepal and India. “It would appear that he is trying to do whatever he can, even going to the extent of an absurd statement regarding Ayodhya and Sri  Ram, to widen the distance between Nepal and India,” he further said.

Dr Singh also asked all people not to be swayed by such statements and continue working to maintain the friendly relations between the two countries. “Right thinking people in both countries should be aware of this ominous policy and do whatever is possible to recreate the friendly age-old ties between our two countries,” he added.

As the remarks of Prime Minister Oli drew flak from across Nepal and India, Ministry of Foreign (MoFA) has already clarified that the remarks made by Prime Minister Oli on the birthplace of Lord Ram are not linked to any political subject and have no intention at all to hurt the feeling and sentiment of anyone. The MoFA in a statement on Tuesday also said that the remarks were not meant to debase the significance of Ayodhya and the cultural value it bears.
