Owing to the extortions on various pretexts along the Lamosanghu-Jiri section of the Araniko highway, public vehicle operators and passengers have been at the receiving end. In Charikot, the All Nepal Transport Workers Union was seen charging ´donation´ on public transport on Friday. Union workers are charging Rs 50 per vehicle stating that the money would be deposited in the union´s welfare fund.
Though there was an agreement that the union would charge vehicles of Araniko Yatayat that employs the union members, the union is charging fees on all vehicles, according to eyewitnesses. And there is no mention of the charged sum in the receipts.
However, Deputy Superintendent of Police Yagya Binod Pokharel of the District Police Office, Dolakha, feigned ignorance about the ongoing donation drive in the district.
