JANAKPUR, May 7: District Forest Office (DFO) of Dhanusha has burnt down 897 houses built by locals encroaching on forests.

A group of 51 forest guards, 60 DFO officials and representatives of various political parties, backed by Armed Police Force (APF) and Nepal police personnel, have set ablaze illegal huts in Bharatpur and Godar village of Dhanusha district over the past three days. [break]

Locals had resisted the DFO´s drive of removing illegal huts by pelting stones at government officials.

However, forest guards and police personnel opened fire in the air to chase away the encroachers. Two forest guards and three locals were hurt in the ensuing clash. Police have arrested five locals who violently resisted them and handed them over to the DFO.

“The move was necessary to curb encroachment,” said Suresh Prasad Sharma, Assistant District Forest officer of Dhanusha.
