NRNA honors sport persons

KATHMANDU, Oct 13 : The Non-Resident Nepali Association’s Sports wing honored five Nepali sports personalities with cash prizes of Rs 25,000 to each in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

The NRNA Sports felicitated athlete Jeet Bahadur KC, the first Nepali player to win international medal, Olympian and Guinness Book of World Record holder athlete Hari Bahadur Rokaya, Mira Rai, the ultra-marathon runner, late volleyball coach Keshab Lal Shrestha, former wrestling player and coach Satyendra Prasad Yadav while marking the Seventh NRNA International General Assembly and Global Conference being held in Kathmandu.

NRNA President Shesh Ghale, NRNA Sports’ Mukesh Singh and other representatives handed over the prizes to the sports personalities. Mukesh Singh, who initiated to form the sports wing in 2011, said that investing in sports is always profitable.
Jeet Bahadur had won bronze medal in the First Asian Track and Field Championship in Manila, Philippines held in 1973, which was the first international medal for Nepal.
Similarly, Hari Bahadur, the three time winner of Everest Marathon in record time that has been mentioned in the Guinness Books of World Records, represented Nepal at the third SAF Games in Calcutta in 1987 and finished third position in the 5 km, and at the 25th Olympic Games in Spain in 1992 and finished 70th out of the 172 participants in the marathon.
Likewise, Mira from Bhojpur, recently clinched the international ultra-marathon held in France. She stood first by completing the 80-km ultra-marathon in 12 and half hours.
The award for former national volleyball team Coach Keshab Lal, who lost his life during devastating earthquake of April 25, was received by his son at the program.
Satyendra Prasad, who hails from Bara district, is the silver medalist of the 11th South Asian Games held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Meanwhile, former taekwondo player Deepak Bista, four-time South Asian gold medalist, said that NRNA should take initiatives to provide trainings to Nepali players in foreign countries to help Nepali sports personnel win more international medals.
