As many as 36 tankers of petroleum products entered Nepal through Biratnagar-Jogbani border checkpoint in eastern part of the country on Friday.Similarly in Dhangadhi, only three tankers of petrol and diesel and an LPG bullet entered Nepal through the Nepal-India border, according to Sharad Paudel, Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) regional office chief.
Fifteen trucks loaded with maize and cement also entered Nepal through this border on Friday.
"Indian authorities have been supplying just 10 percent of Nepal's petroleum requirement," said NOC regional chief Paudel. He added that the limited quantity of petroleum cargo has caused acute shortage of petroleum products in the farwestern region.
Indian authorities claimed that they are unable to smoothly allow the cargo vehicles to enter Nepal due to security reasons as protests by Madhesi parties continue at border checkpoints.
Leaders of United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) have meanwhile claimed that they are responsible for the obstruction along the Nepal-India border. They have been staging sit-in protests, imposing blockade at the Nepal-India border checkpoints in different districts of the eastern Tarai, including major checkpoints of Gaur-Bairginiya, Jaleshwar-Bhittamod and Birgunj-Raxaul.
The border blockade has caused acute shortage of supplies especially of petroleum products across the country, throwing normal life out of gear.
