KATHMANDU, Sept 18: The European Union (EU) and Japan on Sunday issued separate statements welcoming the progress made by Nepal toward promulgating the new statute of the country.

EU's press statement said that the endorsement of Nepal's new constitution was a historic event marking the culmination of Comprehensive Peace Agreement. "The conclusion of this long process should lay the foundation for Nepal's future political stability and economic development," the statement reads.Referring to the ongoing protests in some parts of the country, the EU also said that it expects all parties to come together to address the outstanding concerns of the Nepali citizens in an atmosphere of dialogue and compromise. "The EU fully supports the government and the people of Nepal in the reconstruction of the country following the devastating earthquakes of April and May this year," the statement further said.

The EU also said the breakthrough in state-building should facilitate and speed up ongoing reconstruction efforts and long-term economic development, as well as consolidate a democratic and inclusive society

Issuing a separate statement, the government of Japan has welcomed Nepal's new constitution that was endorsed by the Constituent Assembly on Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Friday, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Fumio Kishida has said that Japan would like to congratulate the people of Nepal as they marked a new step toward a truly democratic country.
