84 conflict victims in Udaipur still awaiting relief

UDAYPUR, July 8: Eighty four conflict-hit families in the district are still awaiting relief promised by the government.

The Local Peace Committee, Udaypur presenting its annual report gave the details of the 84 families. The report says that 294 families have already received cash relief promised by the government.

The conflict-victims were supposed to receive Rs 100,000 in first installment followed by Rs 200,000 in the second installment. They were also supposed to receive another Rs 100,000 by mid July.But though the government has already released the budget for the purpose, the conflict victims have not received the final installment of Rs 100,000 they were supposed to receive by mid July, said committee officer Tulasi Prasad Koirala.

According to Koirala, the families of 81 deceased and six abducted victims have received a total of Rs 17.5 million.

According to reports submitted by the district level mechanism formed to identify the conflict victims, there are still 156 families in the district awaiting recognition as conflict victims.

Similarly, the number of families that have been newly identified as conflict victims and awaiting relief totals 216. According to the District officer of the mechanism Krishna Chandra Ghimire, there are 750 families from the district that have been enlisted as conflict victims.

Participants attending the function complained that the state had failed to address their issues. They complained that there had been instances when the victims were not informed of the government services meant for them.

Although the families were not able to receive Rs 1 million promised to them by the Baburam Bhattarai led government, they look forward to receiving the remaining money.
