Sofia sets national record in 200 m freestyle

KATHMANDU, Aug 5: Nepali swimmer Sofia Shah on Tuesday set a national record in heat rounds of women's 200 m freestyle during 16th FINA World Championship being held in Kazan, Russia. Sofia, who finished 60th among 63 participants, completed the distance in 2 minute 18.93 second.

She surpassed Gaurika Singh's timing of 2 minutes 19.72 seconds set during the 20th Open National and Age Group Swimming Championship held in the capital.

Earlier, Guarika had set new national record in women's 100 m backstroke during heats round of the championship. The 13-year-old had finished the distance in 1 minute 8.12 second to better her previous mark of 1 minute 13.13 seconds set during the 20th swimming championship.

Meanwhile, Kiran Karki finished 69th in the 50m breast stroke with a timing of 34.94 seconds.
