A delegation led by the committee coordinator Amaresh Narayan Jha suggested Jha to take oath in his mother tongue, Maithili, if needed.
Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) President and CPN-UML lawmaker Pasang Sherpa, Newa Khala Manka President Padma Ratna Tuladhar and Unified CPN (Maoist) lawmakers Suresh Ale Magar and Gopal Thakur, among others, were present in the delegation that submitted a memorandum to the vice president and president Dr Ram Baran Yadav.
Talking to myrepublica.com, Sherpa said they asked the vice president to take oath in Maithili.
“I am ready to take oath in my mother tongue. But I am not ready to take oath in Nepali under any force,” Sherpa quoted the vice president as saying.
Sherpa said Jha expressed willingness to take oath in mother tongues of several ethnic groups in Nepal every next month, if he was asked for so, but not ready to take oath in Nepali.
“I am given two options: Either to take oath in Nepali or quit from my position,” Sherpa further quoted the vice president as saying. “I will rather choose to resign than to take oath in Nepali.”
The apex court on Sunday ruled that Jha must take a fresh oath in Nepali within seven days if he wished to continue in the office.
A meeting of ruling Madhesi parties on Tuesday had also asked Jha not to take oath in Nepali.
Meanwhile, several Madhes-based student unions including Madhesi Students´ Forum Nepal (Democratic), Madhesi Students´ Forum Nepal, Tarai Madhes Students´ Front, Nepal Students´ Forum and Students´ Forum have announced a series of protests against the SC ruling on Jha´s oath row from Thursday to Sunday.
