KATHMANDU, Aug 24: CPN-Maoist led 33-party alliance has urged the High Level Political Committee (HLPC) to rethink its stance regarding the roundtable conference and has threatened to disrupt the election if their demands are not fulfilled.

A few hours after the meeting between HLPC and the 33-party alliance, the alliance at a press meet held at the CPN-Maoist head office in Buddhanagar warned that HLPC would solely be held responsible if the alliance decides to launch an agitation. [break]

CPN-Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya said, “It is surprising and sad to see that the major political parties backtracking from previous understandings and agreements. We suspect influence of foreign hands behind abrupt failure of the talks that had been heading in a positive direction.”

Baidya said the alliance still is in favor of consensus as consensus between the political parties would help restore people´s faith in political parties. He claimed that parties represented in HLPC provoked them to launch an agitation despite their flexibility.

“All of a sudden the parties represented in HLPC changed their stance saying the government and poll date cannot be changed,” said Baidya, adding, “The HLPC was not even ready to listen to our arguments. This has left us with no choice other than launching protests.”

Baidya also said that the polls would have no legitimacy if the government decides hold polls without participation of the agitating parties.

Other parties in alliance for consensus

The failure of the talks on Saturday has left the constituent parties of the 33-party alliance disappointed.

Leaders involved in the inter-party talks said they were disappointed as they wanted the Baidya-led CPN-Maoist to engage in talks and seek solution through dialogues.

“Leaders from a majority of the parties in the alliance are still in favor of holding a roundtable and participation in the November 19 election. But failure of the talks has left us disappointed,” Mani Thapa, chief of the Revolutionary Communist Party, told Republica. “HLPC leaders disappointed us as they didn´t listen to the views of representatives from member parties other than the CPN-Maoist,” he said.

According to Thapa, leaders from several other member parties of the alliance, including Pari Thapa of CPN-Unified, Pasang Sherpa of Socialist Democratic Party and Kumar Lingden of Federal Limbuwan State Council, among others, are for seeking solution through dialogues instead of going for agitation. “But HLPC leaders didn´t listen to us,” said Thapa.
