Paddy plantation shrinks in Dang

DANG, July 23: Paddy plantation in Dang district has decreased to less than one third of the total paddy field as compared to last year due to prolonged drought.



Farmers are worried about the paddy production in coming harvesting season as larges swathe of paddy field has remained without paddy in the district. [break]



According to District Agriculture Development Office (DADO), paddy plantation has been limited to10,025 hectares, down by two third as compared to total around 39,000 hectares in the past.



Total rainfall during one month till mid-July was recorded 72.7 ml as sharp fall from 107.2 ml during previous month.



“Paddy plantation has been completed only in 26 percent of the total paddy field,” said Pawan Giri, an officer of DADO said. Paddy plantation has been recorded in the areas such as Lalmatiya, Sonpur, Sisahaniya, and Chaulahi where irrigation facility is available.



More than 30 VDCs of the 39 VDCs of the district has remained barren due to scorching heat for last couple of weeks.



Last year, 159,900 tons of paddy was produced in the district.



“There is still possibility of completing paddy plantation in more than 40 percent of land even with the normal rainfall,” said senior agriculture officer Kamal Kant Jha.
