DHARAN, Aug 17: Suspecting irregularities in the entrance examination results of MBBS and BDS (bachelor"s in dental surgery), the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has carried out a raid at the Dharan based B P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) on Friday and seized all related documents.

A team led by the chief district officer (CDO) of Sunsari, who acts as the head of the CIAA in the district, conducted the raid. [break]

Sunsari CDO Laxman Thapa informed they seized the documents as per the directives from the CIAA in Kathmandu for investigations.

Chief of Nepal Police in the eastern region Deputy Inspector General Upendra Kanta Aryal, Koshi zonal police chief Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Yadav Raj Khanal, and Sunsari district police chief, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ganesh Thapa were among those in the team that conducted the raid.

On August 3, BPKIHS had conducted entrance exams for the new batch of MBBS and BDS. It had published the result of 120 seats on August 6.

However, the exam results came under suspicion after BPKIHS published a new list on August 13 making corrections to the August 6 results.

Anudip Kandel, whose name was published in the merit list of those winning full scholarship in the first result was removed from the list in the corrected result. The new result had included another examinee, Sabin Kumar Ghimire, among those winning full scholarship.

Similarly, the new result had also made some changes to the list of those winning partial fee waiver. Many examinees had expressed serious concerns over the issue.

Following the raid, new MBBS and BDS admissions have become uncertain. However, Dr Balbhadra Prasad Das, the vice chancellor at BPKIHS, said that CIAA has directed only to provide the documents related with the entrance exam so the new admissions would not be affected.

“The letter sent by the anti-graft body does not instruct stopping the admissions. We will follow the CIAA instructions,” said Das.

Dr Bikram Shrestha, the chairman of the Exam Committee, claimed that there is no irregularity involved in the selection process.

“The first result had to be corrected as we found serious mistake in the course of rechecking the answer sheets,” Shreshta informed.
