JUMLA, Aug 10: Locals in the remote villages of Jumla district have been facing an acute shortage of food as the district-based Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) is yet to supply food items to the villages.

Though NFC go-down in the district headquarters has around 4,300 quintals of rice in stock, NFC depots in Jajarkot and Sinja areas have run out of stock, forcing the locals to grapple with food shortage. [break]

NFC chief for the district Mukunda Pyakurel said the villages are facing acute food shortage as the office has not invited tender bids for transporting food to the villages. “We have invited tender bids for food supply to the villages. As soon as we select a contractor, food will be supplied to the villages,” he said.

Last year, the government had announced that it would supply 2000 quintals of rice to the Jajarkot NFC depot. But the depot only received 1,800 quintals of rice.

NFC depots set up in the villages have been distributing rice to locals in the presence of VDC secretary and officials of the Food Distribution Committee formed at the village level.

Obstructions along various road sections linking the villages with the district headquarters have also posed difficulties in distributing food items, added Pyakurel.

According to NFC officials in Jajarkot, the food depot has run out of stock for the last one month.
