Rai, who is currently working at British Gorkha Camp, is an ardent football fan. He also happens to be the manager of Brigade Boys Club (a B-division club based in Kathmandu). He calls himself an enthusiastic supporter of Gagan Thapa. “I am a big football fan. It is natural for me to watch each and every football match in this [Dasharath] stadium,” Rai told myrepublica.com. “Gagan Thapa scored for parliamentarians. I am huge fan of his. He played really well. That´s why I paid such a huge amount for the jersey.”
Rai´s decision to buy the jersey prompted Gagan Thapa to donate the money for a good cause. He chose to donate the money for Baniya´s cause. Thapa has furthermore decided to add Rs 10,000 to the amount paid by Rai. The amount will be handed over to the National and International Player´s Association for Baniya´s treatment. “Subash has understood the sentiment of this event. Plus, this gesture of his also reflects his support for me and this cause,” Thapa said.
Television artistes won the match by 4-1. The only goal from the Parliamentarian-11 was scored by Thapa. Thapa played the whole 90 minutes and was slightly injured. He suffered a light sprain in his left hand and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal also played in the charity match. “Gagan played really well. His goal saved the reputation of 601 parliamentarians and 25 parties,” Rai said. “His jersey will now hang in my living room as a prized possession.”
