Khadka defends Ghanashyam Open title

KATHMANDU, June 13: Home pro Rabi Khadka carded even-par 67 on Thursday to defend the title of the Ghanashyam Open Golf Championship at the Royal Nepal Golf Club.



Khadka completed the 72-hole tournament with a total of one-over 269. He registered one-stroke lead over Army Officers Golf Club pro Dhana Thapa after the completion of the fourth and final round of the second event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2013-14. It was seventh career title for Khadka. He received winner´s trophy and Rs 55,000. [break]



Thapa faltered to four-over 71 to finish second at two-over 270 while Umesh Nagarkoti of Gokarna Golf Club came third at 271 after carding three-under 64. Thapa received Rs 37,000 while Nagarkoti bagged Rs 29,000.



Khadka, who was four strokes behind after the third round, played one-over 34 on the front nine which included a bogey on the eighth hole. Rabi carded one-under 33 on the back nine. He fired an eagle on the 13th hole but suffered a double bogey on the 15th. He then carded a birdie on the 17th hole.

Thapa, who shared the second position with Shiva Ram Shrestha going into the final round, played two-over on either halves. Nagarkoti made a significant improvement in the leader board with three-under 64. After suffering two-over 35 on the front nine, he fired five-under 29 on the back nine that included birdies on the 11th, 12th, 15th, 16th and 18th holes.



Overnight leader Ramesh Adhikari of RNGC slipped down to fourth at 272 after he played a round of 67, while No 1 pro Shiva Ram Shrestha faltered to seven-over 74 to finish fifth at 273.



In Amateur section, Tashi Tsering registered a three-stroke victory over Tirtha Paudel. Tsering, who was six-shot ahead going into the final round, played four-over 71 for a total of 276 while Paudel carded three-under 64 for a total of 279. Sponsor of the tournament and advisor to Nepal Professional Golfers Association (NPGA) Ghanashyam Thapa, NPGA President Rabindra Man Shrestha, President of Nepal Golf Association Madhukar Yakthumba and RNGC Captain Tashi Ghale handed over the prizes to the winners.
