KATHMANDU, May 30: A meeting of the High Level Political Committee (HLPC), held at the army integration Special Committee secretariat in New Baneshwor, formed an eight-member taskforce to sort out contentious issues of the election-related ordinance, on Thursday.

According to Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula, the taskforce members are Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Khimlal Devkota from UCPN (Maoist), Ram Sharan Mahat and Minendra Rijal from Nepali Congress, Agni Kharel and Raghuji Pant from CPN-UML and Hridayesh Tripathi and Jitendra Jha from United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF). The meeting also concluded that the decision earlier in the day to indefinitely postpone Free Students Union elections was inappropriate and called upon Tribhuvan University authorities and concerned students bodies to resolve the issue through dialogue and hold the election as early as possible.

The proposal of proportional representation (PR) threshold, downsizing of CA and the question of eligibility of candidates in elections who have been convicted of serious crimes have remained the thorny issues in the electoral ordinance.  The HLPC will next meet on June 3.
