62 cases of violence occurred during 16 Days of Activism against VAW: INSEC

KATHMANDU, Dec 13: Sixty-two cases of violence against women and girls took place during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

A report released by the Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) mentioned that 19 cases related to violation of human rights, 39 related to women rights and four cases of murder occurred during the review period. 

Of the child rights violation cases, 13 were related to rape, four sexual harassment and two trafficking. Likewise, out of 39 cases related to women’s rights violation, seven were related to attempt of trafficking, five related to rape, 13 related to domestic violence, one related to sexual harassment and five related to trafficking, reads the report released by INSEC Chairperson Dr Kundan Aryal. 

Madhesh Province recorded the highest number of VAW cases which stands at 26. Similarly, 12 VAW cases occurred in Bagmati Province, 11 in Lumbini Province, five in Gandaki Province, four in Koshi Province and two each in Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces. 

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence was observed in Nepal from November 25-December 10 this year under the theme 'UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls. 

This activism started in Nepal in 2004.  According to the INSEC, although cases of violence against women are decreasing in recent years as compared to previous years, it cannot be termed as satisfactory.
