KATHMANDU, July 1: Geeta Rana, a prominent name in Nepali football, on Wednesday formally announced candidacy for the presidency of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA). The election of the supreme football body in the country is scheduled for August/September this year. [break]

Rana, the director of Galaxy Public School and archrival of current ANFA president Ganesh Thapa, said there had not been adequate development in the football sector after the success of peoples´ movement in 2006 even though there have been great changes in other sectors of the country.

Announcing her candidacy amidst a press conference in the capital, Rana made public her commitment to the development of football in the nation including the construction of men´s and women´s academy in all development regions if she were elected to the post.

She also expressed her commitment to make use of floodlight in the Dasharath Sadium and conduct national and international tournament in the nation, and make the financial transaction of ANFA transparent.

She further expressed her commitment to make the youth and national teams strong, send them to different countries like Europe, Latin America and other countries for training, make clubs and district football associations self-dependent, launch income-generation programs for people football with football, and amend ANFA statute as per the need of time, among others.

She expressed dissatisfaction at the ANFA´s present statute. She said, “The statute has given enormous power to the president, but is ambiguos about the general secretary and the treasurer.”

She added, “A single person is dominant in Nepali football. ANFA should work for the overall development of football, not of a limited people.”

Responding to queries of mediapersons, she expects Thapa to be her close opponent. She claimed backing of many district associations and clubs. She said all qualified persons in the football arena will be given a proper role as per their ability if she were elected.

Doubting fairness of the election, Rana said, there should not be conspiracy in the election in favour of anyone´s win.

Rana was elected ANFA president in 2001 but the next year she was sacked by the National Sports Council (NSC) owing to the internal dispute in the Rana-led ANFA. Earlier, NSC had dismissed Thapa-led ANFA in 2000 after it conducted ANFA election despite the orders from the NSC not to hold the election.
