KATHMANDU, Dec 10: Motorcycles account for the highest percentage of road accidents. Of the myriad causes, motorcycle related accidents dominate with 56.4 percent.
As of mid-March (Falgun) in the fiscal year 2023/24, a total of 5.53 million vehicles were registered. Among them, the highest percentage, 80.98 percent, are motorcycles. Motorcycles are also the most involved in road traffic accidents. Similarly, 6.20 percent of cars, jeeps, and other similar vehicles have been registered and 12.82 of tractors, power tillers, auto rickshaws, and other large vehicles have been registered.
When will it end?
In terms of accident involvement, 56.4 percent of accidents involve motorcycles while 19.3 percent involve cars/jeeps. Similarly, 6.2 percent of buses, 4.2 percent of trucks/tankers, and 4.2 percent of tempos are involved in road accidents. Additionally, 1.3 percent of tippers, 0.2 percent of bulldozers, 1.4 percent of microbuses, 2.2 percent of tractors , 4.3 percent of bicycles and handcarts, and 0.3 percent of other vehicles are involved in the accidents.
According to Nemi Bhattrai, civil engineer, the use of vehicles is increasing, and the number of vehicle accidents is also on the rise. On average, around 2,400 people lose their lives in traffic accidents every year.
