KATHMANDU, Jan 1: Five political parties in the six-party ruling coalition have urged Prime Minister and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal to fix timeframe for the return of seized property. This is one of the nine-point demand of the main opposition Nepali Congress. [break]

At a meeting, held at the prime minister´s residence at Baluwatar Thursday morning, the five political parties -- Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML), Madhesi Peoples´ Rights Forum (MPRF), People´s Front Nepal, Communist Party of Nepal (Samyukta) and Sadbhawana Party-Nepal —asked the Maoist leadership to address the NC´s nine-point demand.

CPN-UML leader Surendra Pandey said: "Prime Minister Dahal was positive over fixing the deadline and ending the parliamentary standoff."

He said the prime minister will negotiate with Nepali Congress leaders over the issue.

According to a participant, Prime Minister Dahal, during the meeting, proposed that the process of returning the seized property would be completed within the next three months. Other coalition partners suggested that the prime minister discuss the proposal with NC.

The NC has been boycotting the parliament alleging that the prime minister failed to provide convincing response over the NC´s nine-point demand. The NC has demanded that the Maoists must specify the timeframe for the return of property seized during the decade-long armed conflict, dissolve the paramilitary structure of the Maoist militant youth wing—Young Communist League (YCL), among other things.

NC Central Working Committee member Dr Ram Sharan Mahat said his party will continue parliament boycott if the prime minister fails to specify timeframe to fulfill the nine-point demand.

"I hope Maoist leaders will talk to us today and we may reach an agreement before the parliament begins this afternoon," said Dr Mahat.
