Another young Nepali golfer Sunil KC, who secured third position in the boys´ 17 to 21 years age group of the qualifying tournament, received wild card for the finale to be held at the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, China.[break]
However, Bhutanese golfers Ziwang Gurung and Karma Dorji Khorko clinched gold medals in boys´ 17 to 21 age group and boys´ 12 to 16 years age group respectively to secure tickets for the grand final to be held in Shenzhen.
KC carded two-over 74 on Friday for a total of eight-over 152 after the completion of 36 holes as the leading Nepali player. KC also received a set of golf clubs donated by The R&A, one of the sponsors of the tournament.
Likewise, 15-year-old Lama submitted a card of 10-over 82 on Friday for a total of 31-over 175. Aditi Ghimire finished the tournament with a total score of 40-over 184 to claim silver medal of the girls´ section.
Bhutanese golfer Gurung won the overall tournament with a total score of five-over 149. He carded one-over 73, the best card of the junior tournament, on Friday. His compatriot Dechen Ugyen completed the tournament with a score of seven-over 151 to claim silver medal of the boys´ 17 to 21 years age group.
“It has been an amazing journey since leaving my country for the first time only four years ago to play in a Faldo Series tournament,” said Gurung. “The opportunity to go to another grand final and spend more time with (Sir) Nick Faldo inspired me so much that I practiced for two extra hours in the dark on Thursday night,” he added.
Nepal Golf Association (NGA) President Madhukar Yakthumba, Gokarna Forest Resort Chairman Prem Sachdev, Faldo Series CEO Tom Phillips and NGA Vice President Purna Bahadur Rai gave away the prizes to the winners.
Established in 1996, 38 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 28 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year.
The 2012/2013 Faldo Series Asia schedule features a record 18 tournaments in 15 countries, including four in China and others in The Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand. NGA and the Gokarna Golf Club jointly hosted the tournament in Nepal.
