Kathmandu's winning streak continues, Baitadi defeat Birgunj

KATHMANDU, June 9: Region Number 3 Kathmandu´s undefeated run in the ongoing Springwood T20 National Cricket Tournament continued as the hosts thrashed Region Number 5 Nepalgunj by 9 wickets at the TU Cricket Ground on Tuesday. [break]



Nepalgunj won the toss and decided to bat first. But their decision could not yield any dividends as they were restricted to just 84 runs in 20 overs losing 8 wickets.



Opening duo Rupesh Sharma and Sandip Shrestha were back in the pavilion when the score was 10 runs. Tajuddin Halwai tried to consolidate the situation but he too departed at 30 with an individual score of 17. Anupam Singh and Nasir Ansari were the batsmen who showed little resistance to the Kathmandu bowling attack. Anupam scored scored 21 runs off 27 deliveries while Nasir Ansari scored 21 off 19 deliveries with a four and a six.



Man-of-the-match Raju Basnyat spearheaded the Kathmandu bowling taking three wickets while Rom Shrestha got two and Pramod Basnet got one. Kathmandu achieved the target in 11.5 overs losing only a wicket.



In-form batsman Paresh Lohani scored an unbeaten 26 and his opening partner Dipendra Chaudhary scored 42 runs off 37 balls with six fours and a six.



Prafulla Rana was the only player to take the wicket for Nepalgunj. With this win Kathmandu have completed the league round with five wins.



Earlier, Region No 6 Biatadi registered their first win of the tournament defeating Region No 2 Birgunj by 6 wickets.



National captain Binod Das´ Birgunj won the toss and decided to bat first. They batted recklessly and threw away its wickets in regular interval. As the result, they managed just 75 runs in 18.5 overs. Sunil Sah topscored for Birgunj with 15 runs. Ram Naresh Yadav (10) was only other batsman to reach double-digit.



Chandra Saud and Prem Budal claimed three scalps each. Likewise, Bhuwan Karki took two wickets and Naresh Budhayer took a wicket. Baitadi held their nerve and achieved the victory in 16.2 overs losing only four wickets.



Opening pair of Binod Bhandari and Prem Chaudhary put up 38 runs opening partnership that built the foundation of Baitadi´s win. Bhandari scored run-a-ball 22 while Prem Chaudhary contributed 20 off 23 deliveries. Shakti Bhandari scored 15 runs.



Pradip Sapkota, Anil Mandal and Sanjam Regmi took a wicket each for Birgunj.



Birgunj finished the event with just a win from five matches while Kathmandu have already booked a place in final. The other spot of the final will be filled by the winner of Wednesday´s match between Region No 1 Biratnagar and Region No 4 Bhairahwa.
