5 NC lawmakers absent in parliamentary party election

KATHMANDU, June 20: Five of the 114 Nepali Congress (NC) lawmakers in the legislative parliament remained absent in the voting for the election of the party´s parliamentary party leader on Saturday afternoon.



Three of the five lawmakers were outside the country while party President Girija Prasad Koirala and another lawmaker Nilambar Acharya remained absent even though they were in the capital. Those traveling outside the country are Baldev Sharma Majgainya, Shashank Koirala and Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat.



The election result is expected to be out in the next few hours, reported our correspondent Kosh Raj Koirala from the election venue. According to the NC statute, any candidate must garner a majority votes to be elected as the parliamentary party leader of NC.



NC leaders Sher Bahadur Deuba, Ram Chandra Poudel, Kul Bahadur Gurung and Superbha Ghimire are vying for the post.



If none of the above four secure majority, the party will have to conduct another round of voting among the top two.
