5 killed, 26 injured in bus plunge

SINDHUPALCHOWK, May 31: Five people including a toddler were killed and 26 injured as a bus heading for Tatopani from Kathmandu plunged 50 meters from the road into Sunkoshi River in Sindhupalchowk district Wednesday. A two-year-old girl is missing in the river.



Driver´s carelessness has been blamed for the accident. The bus owner, Rajendra Shrestha, who is not a professional driver, was behind the wheel, at the time of the accident. He has received serious injuries. [break]



The bus (Ba 2 Kha 3347) fell into the river at Kothe near Bafeli area along the Arniko Highway. The accident site is around 75 kilometers from the capital.



The deceased have been identified as 3-year-old Rajib Bhandari from Barhabise VDC-5; Maili Tamang, 54, from Ramche VDC-2; Jayananda Tamang of Fulpingdanda VDC-2; Suntali Lama, 18 of Thumpakhar VDC-6; and Tikaram Nepal, 23, from Fulpingdanda VDC- 8.



Twenty of the injured are undergoing treatment at the local Khadichour Sadabahar Hospital while five critically injured have been admitted to B&B Hositpal in Lalitpur.



Those undergoing treatment at B&B Hospital are Rajendra Shrestha, 30, Takamati Tamang, 48, Shova Timilsina, 29, Rewati Timilsina, 28 and Swasthani Timilsina, 30.



According to police, the rescue team had found the bus turned turtle in the river. According to Ramesh Shrestha, a local involved in the rescue operation, bus owner Shrestha was on the driver´s seat at the time of the accident.



The bus was carrying 32 passengers when the accident occurred.
