5 held for trying to sell antique Buddha statue

KATHMANDU, Aug 12: A team of Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has arrested five persons for trying to sell an antique Buddha statue weighing 12.7 kg. But the police said that the kingpins of the racket are still at large.



According to Superintendent of Police Ishwor Babu Karki of CIB, the five were arrested from various places in Kathmandu. The arrested are identified as Bilaxmi Sedhai, 39, of Kavre, Taan Bahadur Thapa, 37, of Syangja, Dhananjaya Wosti of Nuwakot, Madhav Shrestha, 27, of Arghakhachi, and Nar Bahadur chettri, 32, of Parbat.

SP Karki said, “According to the Archaeological Department the statue is over 100 years old but its origin is yet to be determined.” [break]



The police arrested them posing as potential customers. The statue was recovered from the third floor of Sedhain´s home located at Sovabhagwati-16, Balaju, the police said.



The accused had been held at Metropolitan Police Range Office, Hanumandhoka, on a seven days remand. During a questioning, they confessed to the police that a man had asked the woman to keep the statue. I don´t know the man who asked me to keep the statue, she told the police. The police said that the hunt for the ringleaders of the racket is on.
