5 cops, 27 protesters hurt in Itahari

ITAHARI, Nov 4: At least five policemen and 27 protesters were injured in a clash that ensued after UCPN (Maoist) cadres picketed the District Administration Office (DAO), Sunsari, on Wednesday.



The situation took a nasty turn after Maoists rained stones and bricks on security personnel after the latter stopped Maoists from entering into the office, the police said.



Policemen Bijay Kumar Tharu, Rudra Narayan Khatwe, Dhyan Kumar Rai, Hem Lal Giri and Dilip Neupane were injured in the clash with over 500 Maoists led by lawmakers Kiran Rai and Bishwajit Tharu. Neupane is critically injured while the condition of the others is normal.







Maoists cadres Kedar Guragain, Chotlung Subba, Chitnarayan Kherwar, Mukhtar Alam, Radha Bhattarai, Shambhu Mehta, Ram Karki, Gulabchandra Chaudhary and Narendra Kumar Shrestha, among other, sustained injuries in the incident.



SP Rajendra Man Shrestha said police fired four rounds of teargas cells to take the situation under control.
