Seven of the nine companies that expressed their interests to build the project are Chinese. The others are Australian company and a Russian-Indian joint venture.[break]
Sino Hydro, China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC) and China Ghezouba Group Corporation (CJGC), which are developing Tamakoshi, Melamchi and Chameliya projects respectively, have shown their interests to develop the project. Two new Chinese companies have also expressed their interests.
“We´ll choose those companies that meet all the criteria set by the Nepal government and have experiences of building tunnels,” said Madhav Belbase, the project chief. “Then, the chosen companies will be asked to bid.”
The tunnel construction of the project, which is expected to generate 48 megawatt of electricity and irrigate 60,000 hectares of land, was scheduled to begin in the last fiscal year. But, the tunnel work did not begin on time due to changes in the project´s design.
