KATHMANDU, Aug 3: Amid renewed differences between the establishment faction and the rival faction led by Sher Bahadur Deuba over appointments to various departments, Nepali Congress (NC) district presidents have urged both leaders to consolidate unity within the party.

In separate meetings with NC President Koirala and senior leader Deuba on Thursday, the district presidents said the differences between the top leaders had greatly eroded the morale of local party cadres. [break]They asked the leaders to patch up amicably so that their differences do not spill over into the media, according to NC Okhaldhunga District Committee President Pradip Sunuwar.

Koirala asked the district presidents about weaknesses and mistakes on his part and expressed readiness to rectify them. “We do not want their differences to reach down to the level of party cadres as this will erode morale,” he further said.

Koirala and Deuba had hosted a tea party for the district presidents who are here for the second national gathering of district presidents held in Barhabise, Sindhupalchowk. Almost all district presidents voiced concern at the conclave over the differences between the two senior leaders.

According to Nuwakot District President Jagadish Narsingh KC, Koirala said that he had not flouted the party statute and regulations while taking decisions.

Koirala had complained that the Deuba faction had rendered them unable to function properly. “Please ask leaders of the other side to correct their mistakes also. Since all my decisions have been transparent, you can judge and decide who is right,” Koirala added.

The district presidents, who met Deuba later in the afternoon, made a similar request of him. Stressing the need to forge unity in the party, they asked Deuba to play an appropriate role.

Deuba said Koirala had taken unilateral decisions on a number of issues. “An environment of consensus is needed within the party to foster unity,” Sunuwar quoted Deuba as saying. During the meeting, Deuba did not mention the nominations to various departments.

The district presidents briefed the top leaders about party organization at local level and the problems faced. Koirala assured them that the 14-point declaration issued after the Barhabise national conclave would be taken to the CWC meeting for necessary decisions.

Deuba faction leaders mull resignation en masse

Expressing dissatisfaction over the nomination of zonal coordination committee coordinators and to various departments made by the party president, Deuba faction leaders are mulling resignation en masse.

Gyanendra Bahadur Karki and N P Saud have already resigned as Zonal Coordination Committee coordinators while Purna Bahadur Khadka has announced his resignation as Parliament Department coordinator.
