Press Council’s report widely criticized

KATHMANDU, Aug 10: Press Council Nepal has made its annual newspaper classification report public. However, the report has been widely criticized as the newspaper of the acting chairperson of the council has been classified in category A+.

Vernacular weekly Jana Aastha has been placed under A+ category. Jana Aastha is a single vernacular weekly newspaper that has been placed in this category. It is visible that acting chairperson of the council, Kishore Shrestha is the editor of this weekly newspaper.

Meanwhile, the publications of Nepal Republic Media have been placed under A+ and A category as per the evaluation by the Press Council Nepal. Nagarik daily and Shukrabaar are under A+ whereas Republica took its place for A category.

Other daily national newspapers Gorkhapatra, Kantipur, The Himalayan Times and Naya Patrika are categorized under A+. Similarly, Nepal Saaptahik, Sarbottam Nari monthly, Himal Khabar Patrika and Saaptahik have also been categorized as A+.

Other publications receiving A category include national dailies The Kathmandu Post, The Rising Nepal, Karobar, Annapurna Post, Raajdhani, Nepal Samacharpatra, Himalayan Times (Nepali), Aarthik Abhiyan, Aarthik Dainik Patra and Saurya Daily.

According to Press Council, 816 publications out of total 953 have been evaluated. However, remaining publications were found to be copying exact as others for which they were not taken under consideration.

Also the Council has facilitated to attend with effective documents that it has provided 15 days for any disagreement and 7 days with double cost to discuss about the evaluation.
