New supply policy to make public services effective

KATHMANDU, July 19: The government has announced the supply policies to make the social, economic, commercial and public services effective.



The policies have been announced with an objective of protecting the consumers´ rights by managing smooth supply of daily commodities in reasonable prices. [break]



The Government has brought the Supply Policies-2069 BS with a view to controlling artificial shortage, black marketing, monopolist system, among other uncompetitive activities in the market, Lalmani Joshi, secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies told RSS correspondent.



The new policies would guide to develop the integrated supply system not to disrupt the smooth and regular supply of medicines, daily commodities and other services to the consumers living in the remote and backward areas. It would also support in controlling the adulteration in foods and drinks, and sale of substandard goods, among others.



The newly announced policy would encourage private, public and cooperative sectors for the regular and smooth supply of quality goods by guaranteeing food security in the national level, said Joshi.



Various representative organizations working for the consumer rights protection would be mobilized in coordination to run the market in a disciplined manner.



As per the policies, food grains will be supplied in shortage-hit places, and mechanism will be made for supply for impoverished classes in fair prices by encouraging the cooperatives and that seeds and fertilizers will be guaranteed.



The cost, prices and supply monitoring system will be developed and central, regional and local monitoring committees will be made active and special programmes will be run for smooth supply of essential services and goods.



Public corporations, private sector investors, business houses and cooperatives will be made active in supply management by coordinating them.



The government has also formed a 20-member Central Supply Management Committee institutionally under the coordination of Supplies Secretary for the implementation of the Policies.



One Joint-Secretary each at the Ministries of Commerce and Supplies, Industry, Agriculture and Cooperatives, Finance, Home, Local Development, Labour and Employment and Director Generals at the Department of Standards and Metrology and Commerce are members of the Committee.



Similarly, Chairmen of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) and National Cooperatives Board, General Managers at Nepal Food Corporation, Salt Trading Corporation and National Trading Limited and Executive Chief at Nepal Oil Corporation are also the members of the Committee.



The Committee will include three members including one woman member nominated by the government from organizations related to consumers´ rights.
