KATHMANDU, July 9: Dalit NGO Federation (DNF) has expressed serious concern over the displacement of 10 Dalit families from Pida VDC-8 in Mulkharka of Dhading district, and has asked the government to show seriousness toward protecting the victims from inhuman treatment.

Issuing a press statement on Monday, the DNF has condemned the incident and the inhuman treatment meted to the Dalit families. [break]

The organization has asked the government to take legal action against the guilty. Ten Dalit families had fled their village after they were thrashed by members from non-Dalit community, who were enraged over a Dalit boy marrying a girl from the so-called upper caste.

Relatives of Samjhana Subedi, 18, who married Navaraj BK, 19, vented their angst against BK´s relatives. BK´s mother, Kaushila, was seriously injured in the attack. The DNF has also asked the government to provide compensation to the displaced families. Nepal was declared untouchability free country six years ago.
