KATHMANDU, Aug 28: The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has expressed its dissatisfaction with the government for failing to take forward the constitution amendment process

The UDMF leaders have slammed the government for failing to work for addressing its major demand to amend the constitution. Before the formation of the incumbent government, Nepali Congress (NC)-CPN (Maoist Center) and UDMF had inked a three-point deal that saw UDMF supporting the government. 

As per the deal, two points of the accord have been implemented, while the demand for constitution amendment is yet to be fulfilled. But, the UDMF is still unhappy with the government ‘as it has not even done the tasks within its jurisdiction.

​’“The government has failed to withdraw the cases filed against those arrested during the Madhes Protest and give a full shape to the commission formed to probe incidents during the protest,” said Chairman of Sadhbhawana Party, Rajendra Mahato.

A meeting of Council of Ministers had formed the commission headed by former Justice Girish Chandra Lal. But, the commission is yet to get a full shape.

“Forming the commission was a good step. But, the commission is yet to get a full shape,” said Mahato, “Such dillydallying will definitely increase skepticism over the government’s intention.”

UDMF has demanded with the government that it register a constitution amendment proposal at the Legislature-Parliament at the soonest after discussing the proposal with UDMF. 

“Government should register the proposal after discussing with UDMF. Then only hold talks with other parties,” said Mahato.

UDMF leader Mahendra Raya Yadav said that the UDMF was optimistic about the government, but it can’t trust the government fully. 

“We will withdraw our support to the government the day we conclude the government won’t address our demands,” said Yadav .

The UDMF has also expressed its disagreement with the government for preparing to hold local polls by mid-April 2017. It has demanded with the government to make the constitution ‘widely-accepted’ and hold the elections of the House of Representatives at first.
